Originally established as a plantation in the 17th century. Quakers were among its original settlers, with their farms slowly subdivided and developed beginning in the 20th century.Jericho still hosts historic homes and public buildings from the intervening 400 years.

The original farmland has left open spaces including the MeadowBrook Golf Club and a variety of public commons in the town proper. Shopping and restaurants line the downtown streets. Luxurious Old Westbury forms the western border of the hamlet, with its famous Old Westbury Golf Club and campuses for three universities. Further shopping and entertainment are available in nearby Woodbury, Roslyn and Hicksville. Although Jericho itself is landlocked, public beaches are less than 20 minutes away in Hempstead, Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbors.

Jericho is convenient to New York City, less than 30 miles to the west via the Long Island Expressway or Long Island Rail Road.

Jericho runs its own schools and fire district, and receives law enforcement services from the Nassau County Police Department.
